Hefty® EnergyBag™ Program

Hefty® EnergyBag™ Program at PACK EXPO

The Hefty® EnergyBag™ program is a groundbreaking initiative which has proven that previously non-recycled plastics can be collected and converted into valuable energy resources. It is a significant step towards achieving positive long-term environmental and economic advantages, including new alternative energy resources and fewer tons of landfill trash.

The program is currently underway in the Omaha area, where previously non-recycled plastics are being converted into energy to produce cement. With support from local mayors, the program demonstrates the feasibility of collecting non-recycled plastics, sorting them at a local materials recycling facilities and effectively converting them into energy resources at energy conversion facilities – all via existing waste management infrastructure. During the first 11 months of the program, over 16,000 bags have been collected from over 8,500 homes and 8.7 tons of non-recycled plastics have been diverted from landfills – that’s equivalent to approximately 7.2 million snack-sized chip bags!

Now YOU can take part in the program at PACK EXPO by depositing your plastics – such as wrappers, straws, stir sticks, chip bags, condiment packets and plastic cups, plates and bowls – into one of the many Hefty® EnergyBag™ bins located throughout the facility. After the tradeshow, your plastics will be converted into new energy resources at an energy conversion facility.
